An Historic Moment when Liam Rosenior Breaks Barriers

"Rosenior represents an excellent manager who understands the game back to front, and that's the most important thing.

"However, as Chelsea's pioneering African heritage player, I would be lying to claim this appointment doesn't move me."

Those are the words of the former Chelsea winger, the man who made his groundbreaking first appearance for Chelsea's senior side off the bench in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea hired RC Strasbourg manager Rosenior, 41, as their new head coach after the exit of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within a multi-club ownership group which also owns the London club.

Statistics show only twelve black managers – excluding individuals in interim roles – in England's top flight since its inception 34 years ago.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is he was raised and played not far from here, he understands this community," added Canoville.

"Whenever youngsters see someone like Liam managing the team they support, someone who looks like them, who's from their ends, who comes from a family that champions equality… it is profound and shows them the path is there.

"Indeed, this represents an enormous step for the club, for the capital, for all young person dreaming big.

"But right now? Let's back Liam, provide him with what he needs, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Exactly Do the Statistics Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the top flight's inaugural black head coach.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering black English boss in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the sole additional present top flight boss from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers across English football corresponds with a lack of representation in the boardroom.

According to the BFP 2023 study, forty-three percent of top-flight players come from black backgrounds.

Yet, analysis by the equality organization found just 3.2 percent of executive and leadership positions across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic communities.

Regarding first-team coaching level, based on figures provided by eleven clubs, the percentage stands at 2%.

For all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is five percent.

"He's certainly broken barriers in terms of him being announced as a the Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we want to see more of that," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know there is loads of talent that exists in the black and underrepresented communities... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. We need to continue to striving to break those obstacles down."

Furthermore, the new appointee is set to become one of only four permanent British managers presently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that trails the continent's other big five leagues regarding national representation.

16 out of twenty first division managers in Serie A are from Italy, 11 of the 20 in Spain, Twelve in the Bundesliga are German while 10 of the 18 in France.

Current Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt all aspiring British coaches from an academy background are, in some way regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It is really motivating for up-and-coming British academy coaches to witness someone get such a role with his background and everyone hopes he will be highly successful."

'Let's not forget – he's there based on talent'

Leroy Rosenior, Liam's father, played for clubs such as West London clubs, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career peaked with a five-month stint in charge of then-League One side Brentford back in 2006.

Two years ago, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for his services to tackling discrimination within the sport and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he pursued a path in management. He began writing articles for The Guardian, where in 2017 he addressed the under-representation among managers. He highlighted that ethnicity does not determine ability and said opportunities should be given based on qualification.

He also made the view he would repeat: how significant lack of diversity leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

During an interview for a football podcast, he explained the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "emotional", but said he understood the Dutch international of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to join him with a move from Strasbourg to Chelsea this summer.

In subsequent newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" to hear a staff member make a discriminatory remark. He pledged support for the inclusion initiative and wrote a public message to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" racism.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their time together at Derby County.

The manager bid goodbye to his former club earlier this week before signing a long-term contract with the Blues.

Chelsea had the Premier League's first African heritage boss with Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.

Elliott has since worked in multiple senior positions, including the Football Association's equality board|
