Astronaut Discloses Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the mission, including increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of space.
The diverse crew also comprised leaders in different industries.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
