During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The new figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
